Why was cotton king?

The invention of the power-driven machines for spinning and weaving created a demand for cotton fiber.

Europe and New England demanded larger and larger amounts!!!!

**Cotton Gin was the key to development of the south in agriculture.

Two (2)  types of Cotton

1. Sea Island Cotton (Long Fiber)
2. Upland Cotton  (Short Fiber)

Production of Cotton

One Slave lbs. per day
By hand   1 pound
Hand Gin  50 pounds
Water Power Gin   1000 pounds

Results: The development of the Cotton Gin increased the Souths dependency on cotton.

3.  Slaves provided the means for mass production and high profits.
